I spent a little time last night putting together a little virtual card catalog card generator. Insomnia? Maybe a little.
At any rate, I wanted to share the love and let the people of the world generate their own card catalog images. Usage is fairly straight-forward. Just fill out the info you’d like to see on the card and make it. Obviously, it doesn’t pull any bibliographical data from anywhere, so that leaves a lot up to your imaginations…
Please be kind to it and don’t try to incorporate this service into your own OPACs directly from here (you never know). I’ve provided the source code for that if you’re so inclined.
Enjoy!

Fixed the apostrophe slash bug.

Roll Your Own Catalog Card […]

[…] Everyone is making these neato virtual card catalog cards for their novels, and I started to do one for Story of a Girl but I wasn’t sure how it all worked and I didn’t want to do anything permanent, so I made a fake one as a test. Then the result amused me, because I am nothing if not my own best audience. […]

[…] Paul used a phrase of Tim O’Reilly’s when he said that library 2.0 is “an architecture of participation”. It is about making it possible for people who wouldn’t normally meet to collaborate together with ease. For this to happen librarians have to come off of their high horses a bit and have some fun with the data - he used John Blyberg’s card catalog as an example. […]

Yikes - what happened to the link? I’ll be broken hearted if this goes offline - I have been recommending it to fellow artists, and want to include it on my new website: susiejefferson.com. There are a lot of people out there in love with this gadget, so PLEASE fix it! Thanks so much….
By Susie Jefferson on 01.25.08 5:48 am | Permalink
Hi Guys,
Yes, I intend to fix it. I noticed that it was broken last night after Joan’s comment. So please be patient and I’ll have it back up as soon as I can get a few minutes to work on it.

Hi John,
Is your card generator down again? Tried to use it tonight and its not there.
Thanks,
staci

Dear John:
I asked before if there was a way to save the card I generated as a .jpg, or if not how else I can create an image, so I can include it on my librarian blog page. Every attempt I try to create a link or image setup, it falls back to the code and doesn’t show a thing…
