[...] I don’t consider myself a techie, much less a geek or a nerd, by these definitions or any others. That’s not meant to denigrate any of the terms–I simply don’t feel skilled enough to claim any of the titles. I’m still at the “take the server out of the box” phase. [...]

[...] My assistant (RayAna Park) and I were lucky enough to get the cover of this month’s issue of ONLINE Magazine and we’re so excited! I was thinking I might share snippets of code with you all throughout the year, so let me know what pieces you want more information about. I’ll admit that we fell did not write the object-oriented code (like John recommends) but it could still be helpful and useful for you and your library. [...]

[...] But the problem comes about that not everyone has the expertise available and rely solely on vendors for solutions. How bad this is is dependent on your DIY mindset. There are plenty of people that depend on their dealership to keep their car going and have no plans on ever doing things themselves. As said above, many of these things aren’t simple. At librarycamp this topic came up again and again and the possible solutions to this problem aren’t necessarily simple either. I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit lately and I’ll hopefully be posting quite a bit on my thoughts soon. Until then I recommend reading Blyberg’s thoughts on the matter.
Karen,

Good point. I guess what I was trying to say is that libraries should make some official policy changes in regards to open source so that developers within the library itself can release code autonomously.

You make some very good points, and I really like the beginning of this post. But I wonder if "adopt open source" isn't more of a credo in general and not one that can specifically help tech-starved librarians build websites?

I can't agree more about the conferences. For those of us who already know about all the latest ideas and some basic tech skills, we need something a little more detailed.

As an aside, your blog is one of my favorite library related readings. Thanks.

Sean,

That's exactly right. I'd love to do a snort or iptables workshop, but I think as things stand now, it would be hard to get traction for that kind of material at traditional library conferences.
