[...] Getting data out of the OPAC to play with. The simplist would be modifying templates to have microformats for scraping. More advanced options include AADL’s REST interface, OpenSearch, RSS/ATOM, SRU, etc. Lots of potential services, some of which overlap. Things like the III XML server help make these services possible. [...]

[...] Mashups are about individual empowerment. As libraries, we need to be able to step right in and lend tools to our users that will allow them to start creating these unintended uses. Again, this requires us to have… that’s right, suitable APIs! The PatREST project I’m working in strives to do just that and I’m so grateful that Dave Pattern at Huddersfield has joined me. We’ve been able to create a bilateral push for this by producing near-identical results using two very different systems. [...]

Ed,
That's definately on the dockets.

Casey,
Thanks! Yes, I've heard whispers of NCIP before but never looked in to what it was.

Re: an XML schema for patron circulation data/functions, yes, it has been done before. It's called NCIP:

http://www.niso.org/standards/standard_detail.cfm?std_id=728

It may be way too complex for your needs, though -- just the standard is 118 pages long, and it was really geared towards automation of inter-library loans and self-checkout terminals.

Horizon and TLC both come with implementations of NCIP.

I'd be interested in seeing the XML schema you're using for holds/items out...

Thanks John, this is all nice.

When you get a change, write up the access to the feeds for new books and "hot items" through this kind of interface, and I'll switch my wall of books handling away from the RSS feed into this API.
